It also covers basic open hearth, electric arc furnace and stainless steelmaking, before discussing the area of casting of liquid steel ingot casting, continuous casting and near net shape casting. The book concludes with a chapter on the status of the ironmaking and steelmaking in India.

In line with the application of theoretical principles, several worked-out examples dealing with fundamental principles as applied to actual plant situations are presented.

About the Author
AHINDRA GHOSH (Sc.D., MIT, USA), formerly Professor, Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, is well known for his expertise in Metallurgical and Materials Thermodynamics.

Besides 35 years of teaching and research experience at IIT Kanpur, Professor Ghosh has rich industrial experience, having worked with major companies like Tata Steel and Tata Consultancy Services. A Life Fellow of Indian Institute of Metals and Institution of Engineers (India), Life Member ISTE, and Fellow, Indian National Academy of Engineering, he has contributed extensively to national and international journals including Metallurgical and Materials Transactions (USA), ISIJ International (Japan), Steel Research (Germany), Ironmaking and Steelmaking (UK), and Trans. Indian Institute of Metals. He has also authored three books.

CHATTERJEE, AMITA metallurgical engineer from Banaras Hindu University, AMIT CHATTERJEE was awarded the Doctorate of Science (Engineering) Degree by the University of London in 1988 for his outstanding work on coal-based direct reduction and oxygen steelmaking. He had earlier obtained his PhD in process metallurgy from the prestigious Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, of which he is also a Fellow.

He started his professional career in the steel industry in Germany, followed by over 35 years of distinguished service in Tata Steel. At present, he is an Adviser in Tata Steel.

Dr. Chatterjee is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, England, The Indian Institute of Metals, India, as well as The Indian National Academy of Engineers, India. He has over 500 publications to his credit and is the recipient of several awards from India and overseas, including the National Metallurgist Award (1977), Visvesvaraya Gold Medal (1981 and 1996), SAIL Gold Medal (1982), Bhoruka Gold Medal (1992), Tata Gold Medal (1997), Platinum Medal (2002) and many others.

Dr. Chatterjee has authored several books: Ironmaking and Steelmaking Theory and Practice and Sponge Iron Production by Direct Reduction of Iron Oxide (both published by PHI Learning, New Delhi) as well as two other books entitled Beyond the Blast Furnace and Metallics for Steelmaking Production and Use besides a number of Monographs on Cokemaking, Sintermaking, Ironmaking, Continuous Casting, etc.

KIRK C. WHITE is Past Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Vermont, has served as Illustrious Grand Lecturer for the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Vermont and is active in the R.C.C., S.R.I.C.F. and other Masonic bodies. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and Religion, an M.A. in Counseling, and has done post-graduate study in transpersonal psychology specializing in initiatic techniques, and the psychology of personal transformation and consciousness change.

Required reading for all Brother Masons.

How I wish I had been handed a copy of this book during my first journey to the Oriental Chair as it would have been an invaluable aide in planning for my year in the East! Brother Kirk White's "Operative Freemasonry: A Manual for Restoring Light and Vitality to the Fraternity" is absolutely required reading for anyone in a Masonic officer line as well as for all Brothers of our Ancient and Noble Craft. Brother White aptly point out how Freemasonry has, by and large, devolved into a sort of social club that pays only lip service to our noble tenets of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth and hardly fills its role of "Making Good Men Better." However, for every problem he points out he provides a myriad of well thought out solutions, each one based on the core principal of returning the Fraternity to its roots. This is a guide, not only for running a successful Lodge, but for being a better Mason. This book is a rallying cry for the Brotherhood of Freemasonry to remember what our Fraternity is supposed to be and to maintain the highest standards and principles in our Masonic Practice. As such it is one of the best books on contemporary Blue Lodge Masonry currently in print. It is a definite must read for every serious Brother Mason.

Clear, practical, inspirational

In "Operative Freemasonry," Kirk White draws attention to Masonry's tenants (Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth) and recognizes that Masonry today has slipped into little more than a social and civic club. He encourages a return to those roots by which Masonry really does "make good men better." The true power of this book is its clarity and practicality. Any individual Mason, desiring a more fulfilling practice, will find excellent ideas for study, topics for meditation and encouragement on their path. Likewise for a Lodge of committed members who wish to "dig deeply into the shadow of oblivion for the substance upon which Freemasonry was formed" we find here a guide: a plan for mentorship to provide the new member the encouragement and guidance they need to excel, advice for getting the most out of Lodge meetings and initiations, and for working as a group to perform (and experience) the more powerful and inspiring ritual. "Operative Freemasonry" lives up to its lofty goals and is a must for anyone dedicated to the Craft.

With Operative Freemasonry, W:. Bro:. Kirk White joins the ranks of contemporary Masons shining a light towards a more robust and fulfilling Blue Lodge experience. What distinguishes Bro:. White's book from others, however, is its supporting documents. Moving from the source Monitorial material of Bro:. William Preston and the Grand Lodge of Vermont, towards such luminaries as Albert Mackey and W. Kirk MacNulty, and later incorporating the tenets of modern psychology, it seems that Bro:. White is attempting an odd marriage of sources. By the book's completion, however, it is clear that Bro:. White has deftly combined each of these disparate inspirations, presenting a clear and convincing argument that 1) the purpose of Masonry is to experience the ineffable, which we call Light, 2) Light is attained via the cognitive shift we call Initiation, 3) Initiation lays in intentional and well performed preparation and ritual, and 4) our ancient Ritual has been validated by contemporary psychology. The actions that we call preparation and Ritual, in actuality, are the same steps recognized by modern behavioral scientists as those which create internal change, thus providing the catalyst for the reception of Light.

While this is the main thrust of Bro:. White's book, there is more in the offering. He follows this revelation by suggesting a simple and effective model for putting Masonry in action; demonstrating externally those changes which have occurred internally. Conjuring a hypothetical Lodge of only 20 members, Bro:. White proffers that if five of those Brothers commit to serving their community, five to research and contemplation, five to mindful prayer to the Great Architect, and five to creating Masonic works and artifacts, then that Lodge will thrive, with each Brother benefiting from the shared Masonic energy and Light. He follows this model by providing a brief synopsis of the various appendant bodies and quasi-Masonic entities, describing the potential Light to be sought within those ranks.

About the Author
Joseph S. Alter is an anthropologist who earned his doctoral degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He teaches at the University of Pittsburgh, where he is Professor and Department Chair. He was born in Landour, Uttarakhand and divides his time between Pittsburgh and the Allegheny mountains of western Pennsylvania and Mussoorie in the Himalayas.

For thirty years he has been conducting research on various aspects of society and culture in South Asia with a particular focus on physical fitness, sport, and the culture and history of medicine. He has written five books, including The Wrestler s Body (University of California Press, 1992), Knowing Dil Das (Penguin India 2010), Gandhi s Body (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2000), Asian Medicine and Globalization (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2005) and Yoga in Modern India (Princeton University Press, 2004). He has also published extensively on a range of sports, including kabaddi and jori/mugdal, on the cultural history and philosophy of Ayurveda and Unani medicine, and on the impact of colonial and post colonial development on the political economy of Mussoorie.

This book is excellent. The language is at times too academic, but there is a trove of information about sex abstinence, energy and benefits of brahmacharya as taught by Indian sages (in relation to wrestling). It's not one of those Tao ideas - have 'sex' but just don't ejaculate (?). While this book could speak more to the wordly benefits of strict brahmacharya and sex abstinence in general (i.e. job competitiveness, productivity, focus, IQ etc), I understand it wasn't the author's objective so it's ok.

I consider this book to be a distillation of essential ideas behind brahmacharya (references span several pages), which are presented in the context of sports. Chapters like 'Seminal Truth' speak directly about the benefit of celibacy as viewed by Indian tradition. In addition, Indian teachers make no scruples about saying it directly - avoid ejaculation at all costs, even in wet dreams (resiliency of semen). The author doesn't explore alternative paths (thankfully) and stays true to the message of brahmacharya while exploring the topic from anthropological perspective.

Good work, a lot of info about brahmacharya/celibacy without prevarications and trying to make it somehow compatible with Western sex ideals i.e. ejaculate as frequently as you can. I recommend this work to all those who want to stay/become celibate to transmute/sublimate their semen energy for higher life purposes (improve IQ, job competitiveness, alertness etc)

Though there is some great info in this book

Though there is some great info in this book, I found it hard to dig out. The book could have easily been condensed down to maybe 100 pages. Many queries are harder to read than they should be due to lack of any indentation. I know its a book, and there are limitations, but some attempt at formatting may have been better.
To be clear, I am definitely not knocking the author's skills at SQL Server tuning, he absolutely knows his stuff. There are some solid gold nuggets scattered around through the book.

This book aims to ensure your SQL Server databases are healthy, how does it fare?

Robert Pearl sets out to provide you with the knowledge to ensure your SQL Server databases are healthy, this includes aspects of performance, maintenance, high availability and disaster recovery.

His book is targeted at database administrators and developers, additionally, system administrators might also find the content helpful.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Introduction to Healthy SQL

The chapter opens with a look at the role of the DBA, being involved with backups and restores, creating database objects, and resolving performance problems. The importance of having a database that performs well, is auditable, and regularly maintained (i.e. is healthy), is discussed in terms of a SQL health check.

The chapter expands on the components of a SQL health check, including:
*Performance – primary reason for a SQL health check. Identify why queries are slow then improve them. Spot issues before they’re escalated. Proactive approach
*Security – the need to protect data
*Stability – apply service packs and relevant cumulative updates, in a timely manner
*Audits – prove the instance is healthy, at any time
*Backups – often first line of defence when have problems
*Business continuity – ensure systems can continue after a disaster

The chapter continues with a look at when to perform a heath check (now), highlighting the importance of creating a baseline – against which future changes can be compared. Helpful website links are provided (as they are throughout the book).

This chapter provides a helpful overview of what a SQL health check is, why it should be performed, some potential problems if it’s not performed, and some of the tools used. It also outlined what to expect from the rest of the book.

I found parts of the chapter chatty and informal (this occurs throughout the book), which may be suitable for some readers. The Surface Area Configuration tool is referenced as SAG, this should be SAC. There’s a nonsensical sentence that reads “I suggest that you the entire the book, at least once...” These problems should have been caught by the editors/reviewers.

Conclusion

The book aims to ensure your SQL Servers are healthy. It certainly covers many tools, techniques, and best practices. There are plenty of step-by-step walkthroughs, relevant code examples, helpful diagrams, and links to useful websites throughout the book. The book should take your level of understanding of SQL Server health, from 2 to 8.

Reading the initial chapters, I had expected the book to provide distinct separate checklists to enable me to check the health of my SQL Servers. I expected the checklist to tell me what data values where acceptable, and details of how to correct bad data values. However, this is not the case. In many ways, the book as a whole becomes the source of your checklists.

I found some of the initial chapters muddled - maybe because there is a lot to say on the subject, and the topics overlap and intertwine. Many tools are introduced and then discussed in more detail later, I would have preferred the tool usage to be centralised in one chapter, and earlier in the book. I found the book’s style too chatty and informal, but this might suit other readers.

A few areas contained obvious spelling mistakes e.g. statiscs, exeucet , “dot able scan”, “than0for”. Some of the links given between the chapters were incorrect. The query output is often difficult to read, owing to bad formatting. Sometimes, the language used was a bit lax (e.g. log shipping requires the full recovery model). All these faults should have been caught by the reviewers/editors.

If you want to ensure your SQL Servers are healthy, with respect to performance, security, stability, audits, and business continuity, I can recommend this wide-ranging book.

Excellent, detailed book on SQL Optimization. I've been a SQL developer for many years and was able to pick up several tips on how to manage my servers more effectively. I recommend this to all MS SQL DBAs.
