About the Author
KIRK C. WHITE is Past Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Vermont, has served as Illustrious Grand Lecturer for the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Vermont and is active in the R.C.C., S.R.I.C.F. and other Masonic bodies. He holds a B.A. in Psychology and Religion, an M.A. in Counseling, and has done post-graduate study in transpersonal psychology specializing in initiatic techniques, and the psychology of personal transformation and consciousness change.

Required reading for all Brother Masons.

How I wish I had been handed a copy of this book during my first journey to the Oriental Chair as it would have been an invaluable aide in planning for my year in the East! Brother Kirk White's "Operative Freemasonry: A Manual for Restoring Light and Vitality to the Fraternity" is absolutely required reading for anyone in a Masonic officer line as well as for all Brothers of our Ancient and Noble Craft. Brother White aptly point out how Freemasonry has, by and large, devolved into a sort of social club that pays only lip service to our noble tenets of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth and hardly fills its role of "Making Good Men Better." However, for every problem he points out he provides a myriad of well thought out solutions, each one based on the core principal of returning the Fraternity to its roots. This is a guide, not only for running a successful Lodge, but for being a better Mason. This book is a rallying cry for the Brotherhood of Freemasonry to remember what our Fraternity is supposed to be and to maintain the highest standards and principles in our Masonic Practice. As such it is one of the best books on contemporary Blue Lodge Masonry currently in print. It is a definite must read for every serious Brother Mason.

Clear, practical, inspirational

In "Operative Freemasonry," Kirk White draws attention to Masonry's tenants (Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth) and recognizes that Masonry today has slipped into little more than a social and civic club. He encourages a return to those roots by which Masonry really does "make good men better." The true power of this book is its clarity and practicality. Any individual Mason, desiring a more fulfilling practice, will find excellent ideas for study, topics for meditation and encouragement on their path. Likewise for a Lodge of committed members who wish to "dig deeply into the shadow of oblivion for the substance upon which Freemasonry was formed" we find here a guide: a plan for mentorship to provide the new member the encouragement and guidance they need to excel, advice for getting the most out of Lodge meetings and initiations, and for working as a group to perform (and experience) the more powerful and inspiring ritual. "Operative Freemasonry" lives up to its lofty goals and is a must for anyone dedicated to the Craft.

With Operative Freemasonry, W:. Bro:. Kirk White joins the ranks of contemporary Masons shining a light towards a more robust and fulfilling Blue Lodge experience. What distinguishes Bro:. White's book from others, however, is its supporting documents. Moving from the source Monitorial material of Bro:. William Preston and the Grand Lodge of Vermont, towards such luminaries as Albert Mackey and W. Kirk MacNulty, and later incorporating the tenets of modern psychology, it seems that Bro:. White is attempting an odd marriage of sources. By the book's completion, however, it is clear that Bro:. White has deftly combined each of these disparate inspirations, presenting a clear and convincing argument that 1) the purpose of Masonry is to experience the ineffable, which we call Light, 2) Light is attained via the cognitive shift we call Initiation, 3) Initiation lays in intentional and well performed preparation and ritual, and 4) our ancient Ritual has been validated by contemporary psychology. The actions that we call preparation and Ritual, in actuality, are the same steps recognized by modern behavioral scientists as those which create internal change, thus providing the catalyst for the reception of Light.
While this is the main thrust of Bro:. White's book, there is more in the offering. He follows this revelation by suggesting a simple and effective model for putting Masonry in action; demonstrating externally those changes which have occurred internally. Conjuring a hypothetical Lodge of only 20 members, Bro:. White proffers that if five of those Brothers commit to serving their community, five to research and contemplation, five to mindful prayer to the Great Architect, and five to creating Masonic works and artifacts, then that Lodge will thrive, with each Brother benefiting from the shared Masonic energy and Light. He follows this model by providing a brief synopsis of the various appendant bodies and quasi-Masonic entities, describing the potential Light to be sought within those ranks.
W:. Bro:. White's Operative Freemasonry is likely to appeal to the younger Masons entering the Craft, but can also provide inspiration to more seasoned Brethren as well. It is essential reading for any Masonic officer, and for any Brother looking to attain Light in Masonry and Light for his Lodge.
