About the Author
Jodi Ellen Malpas was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, UK, where she lives with her family. Working for the family construction business fulltime and with the prospect of taking it over once her father retired, she tried to ignore the lingering idea of writing a novel until it became impossible. She finally found the time and courage to release her creative streak and in October 2012 self-published This Man as an e-book. She took a chance on a story with some intense characters, notably Mr. Jesse Ward, the Lord of the Manor, and sparked incredible reactions from women all over the world. Two months later, Jodi made the decision to give up her day job to concentrate on her new and very unexpected career in writing.

This Man is Beyond Crazy
By Miss H
**SPOILERS ABOUND**
Apparently, I'm a glutton for punishment. Me and this book/trilogy are not friends. Not at all. It's like a train wreck--I don't want to look, but can't stop myself.
Only five short days have gone by since Ava left Jesse. Her entire world has ended. She's depressed and having a meltdown, reminiscing about her epic love. You know, her month-long relationship with Jesse.
Of course, this being the second book, it's obvious their separation won't last long. Just like that, they're back together. Shocked? Yeah, neither am I.
Not much has changed. Jesse is still a domineering, overly possessive control freak...times infinity. He's clingy and overly dependent. He wants all of Ava's time and attention all day, every day. She's a possession, a toy that he refuses to share. Jesse is a psycho. Nothing about his behavior is sexy. It's scary.
I'm tired of him always correcting her language. She's a grown woman. Ava already has a father. She doesn't need another one. But, just like with everything else, Jesse has absolutely no regard for Ava's feelings about anything. He does want he wants, when he wants.
Oh, and not to worry. He's not an alcoholic.
Except he is.
An alcoholic is an alcoholic. No matter how often he drinks, he has an alcohol addiction problem. Supposedly, he doesn't 'need' it, but he can't stop once he starts. He drinks himself into a coma. That's a problem. Alcoholism does not go away. An alcoholic is an alcoholic for life.
Everyone in this book is in denial.
1: "'No rehab.' John states firmly. 'He's not an alcoholic in the classic sense of the word. He's not obsessed with alcohol, Ava. He drank to lighten his foul mood, to fill a gap. Once he starts, he can't stop.' He offers me a small smile. 'You helped, girl.'"
2: "'I'm not a raving alcoholic, Ava. I admit I get carried away once I do have a drink and I find it hard to stop, but I can take it or leave it. I was in a bad place after you left me. I just wanted to numb the pain.'"
And then, of course, Ava puts the blame on herself.
1: "I glance at the bottle and notice it's sealed and full, but it's still there and something made him put it there...me. I'm the reason for his screwed up mind, his ridiculously ambitious objectives and his meltdowns. This is my entire fault. I've made him into a neurotic control freak."
2: "'How can you need me if I make you do this to yourself?' I ask tiredly. 'You're more self-destructible now than you were before me. I've made you need alcohol, not want it. I've made you into an unreasonable, crazy man, and I'm certainly not stable anymore. Don't you see what we're doing to each other?'"
3: "I blank my mind of everything except that, the music fades and I brace myself for my own punishment - my punishment for reducing Jesse to a fraught mess of a man, for making him need alcohol, not just want it, for turning him into an uptight, neurotic freak...for making him do this to himself."
That last quote...yeah, that particular scene made me rage. In a very stupid bid to help Jesse see her point of view, Ava has some man at the Manor whip her back raw. The same way that he had Sarah whip his. Why would he do that, you might ask? He did it to prevent himself from drinking. He doesn't have a problem, remember?
As if we didn't already know, Jesse is not-so-secretly trying to knock Ava up. To trap her into staying with him. He makes her tell him repeatedly that she won't leave him, not that he'd ever let her, but even that's not enough assurance for him. Apparently, they don't have enough problems in their dysfunctional and extremely unhealthy relationship. Bringing a baby into an environment like that makes perfect sense. Even after she finally puts the pieces together on her own (he'd never confess), Ava lets it slide, just like everything else he does.
I didn't think it was possible, but Ava is an even bigger pushover than she was in the last book. Why bother arguing with Jesse at all? It's a waste of time. She gives in as soon as he gets his hands on her. Rinse and repeat. Jesse is a bully and tramples all over her. She knows this and allows it to happen. I just can't with her.
Hiding her birth control pills, using sex as a weapon to get her to agree to unreasonable demands, invading and taking control of her personal and professional life is not okay. That doesn't even begin to cover all the lying and manipulation, both in and outside the bedroom. Oh, and we can add cheating to the list as well.
Kate is still a terrible friend. She's secretive and hides things from Ava. Things that pertain to Jesse and the Manor. Aren't best friends supposed to share things with each other, have each other's backs? Sisters before misters and all that?
Also, this book could use a good editor. Almost all the dialogue tags are punctuated incorrectly, with periods at the end of the dialogue where commas should be used instead. If you're going to put your book out on the market for people to buy, then it needs to be properly edited. It's insulting to your readers not to do so.
"His eyes turn black. 'Don't say things like that, Ava.'" - When did this turn into a paranormal romance? Human eyes do not turn black when one is angry.
Sex, fighting, and more sex. That's about all this book has to offer. We do eventually learn how old Jesse is. Not that it matters. He sure doesn't act his age. He acts like an adolescent. We also learn some things about his past sexual encounters. `Drink and sex go hand in hand for me.' So, as you can see, alcohol isn't his only problem. That's about it as far as any real plot progression. If you remove all the excessive sex scenes, then you're not left with much of a story.

This man is crazy
By Reader
So at last it's here the much anticipated second book in the "This Man Trilogy".
After what happened at the end of the first book, I was eager to see how the author would resolve the situation between Jesse and Ava. To be honest this started really well, plenty of drama and angst. I fully expected for there to be a full and frank discussion between Jesse and Ava. But there was none, nothing. Instead what we got was sex and more sex. At a quarter of the way in, I kept thinking when's the story going to start.
There are a couple of things thrown in, that are probably going to feature more in the next book. But what really annoyed me was Ava's inability to get any answers to her questions, and not just from Jesse. That brings me to her BF Kate, she wasn't my favourite character in the first book, she seemed to be more on Jesse's side than Ava's. That was more apparent in this story.
The pace did pick up once I got two thirds in. There were answers eventually to some things, but that was anticlimactic. Jesse's character was way OTT. Dictating to Ava on just about everything, including what to wear. his posessive and controlling nature, was taken too far here. making him come across a crazy person, he was completely unreasonable. Ava's character was just smothered completely. Unlike some other readers who thought she was strong, I take the complete opposite view she was weak. As to the Manor, I thought it was incredulous how accepting everyone was. The only normal reaction came from Victoria IMO.
The writing was more smooth and polished, this time, but it also had lost a lot of the raw intensity that the first book had. I missed the wit and banter that Ava shared with her workmates they were hardly featured. There were still some editing issues but no where near as bad as the first book. On one occasion where there was a difference of spelling between Britain and the US, the author had used the latter, which is odd, as she is British and this is a British book.
Overall I was a bit disappointed with this book, I felt it dragged on quite a bit. There was way too much sex, and not enough story. This book definitely doesn't have the feel good factor. If anything it's a bit depressing and not very romantic.
I gave it three stars, but it was more a two and a half for me.

A Trilogy Not Worth Finishing - SPOILERS
By Shirley
I can't remember why I liked it, but I liked the 1st book. It got me interested enough to pick up the 2nd without reading the reviews...I should have read the reviews...especially the negative ones.
I enjoy sex in my stories, but this was ridiculous. Every other interaction between Ava and Jesse was sexual...and not all in a good way. Like most reviewers have noted, Jesse is NOT sexy. He is abusive, manipulative, secretive, condescending, a bully, and oh, here's the best part - an alcoholic CHEATER. Yes, he cheated on Ava and it is so friggin' ironic because he blows a fuse whenever Ava even breathes the same air as another man. And she forgives him within a span of 5 minutes! (But hey, what girl wouldn't love a story about how your man loves you so much that you drive him to the brink of insanity and his only coping mechanism is drinking and when he drinks he also likes to have sex with many different women? Sign me up! I like my romance with a huge side of STDs please!)
Ava is immature, stupid (yes, she really is...don't know how she is such a successful designer), uninteresting, fickle, a total doormat. There are no positive attributes to counterbalance so many of her negatives. I guess she's pretty.
The gist of the story: Ava and Jesse fight because a) she hides things from him (seeing her ex, Sarah's machinations, talking to a client who wants to destroy Jesse); and b) he hides things from her (about EVERYTHING!). They have sex. They fight again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
