Systems Engineering Principles and Practice, by Alexander Kossiakoff, William N. Sweet, Sam Seymour, Steven M. Biemer

The Bestselling Guide to the Engineering of Complex Systems, Now Thoroughly Updated

The first edition of this unique interdisciplinary guide has become the foundational systems engineering textbook for colleges and universities worldwide. It has helped countless readers learn to think like systems engineers, giving them the knowledge, skills, and leadership qualities they need to be successful professionals. Now, colleagues of the original authors have upgraded and expanded the book to address the significant advances in this rapidly changing field.

An outgrowth of the Johns Hopkins University Master of Science Program in Engineering, Systems Engineering: Principles and Practice provides an educationally sound, entry-level approach to the subject, describing tools and techniques essential for the development of complex systems. Exhaustively classroom tested, the text continues the tradition of utilizing models to assist in grasping abstract concepts, emphasizing application and practice. This Second Edition features:

  • Expanded topics on advanced systems engineering concepts beyond the traditional systems engineering areas and the post-development stage

  • Updated DOD and commercial standards, architectures, and processes

  • New models and frameworks for traditional structured analysis and object-oriented analysis techniques

  • Improved discussions on requirements, systems management, functional analysis, analysis of alternatives, decision making and support, and operational analysis

  • Supplemental material on the concept of the system boundary

  • Modern software engineering techniques, principles, and concepts

  • Further exploration of the system engineer's career to guide prospective professionals

  • Updated problems and references

The Second Edition continues to serve as a graduate-level textbook for courses introducing the field and practice of systems engineering. This very readable book is also an excellent resource for engineers, scientists, and project managers involved with systems engineering, as well as a useful textbook for short courses offered through industry seminars.

This book is cumbersome, lacks quality writing, and is nearly void of illustrations.
By Terpman1980
First off, I am a professor and teach systems engineering. I bought/acquired both a hard copy and a soft Kindle copy of this text book and made it the required text for my course. I bought the Kindle version so I could cut and paste items into briefing slides for use in class presentation materials. When I got half way through the text, I got a notice that I exceeded the copy limit the publisher had set up. If you want to cut and paste material out of the text, don't buy a Kindle version of it since you will be prohibited from doing so.

The first half to the text is cumbersome. The author defines his own unique phases for his own unique life cycle model and breaks out the conceptual design phase into 3 phases and grudgingly goes through all the typical system engineering tasks in each phase. The result is he doesn't release a top-level requirements spec until the last page of chapter 8. Once you get through the first eight chapters, the layout improves and there is some pretty good content in the second half of the book. Throughout the entire book, however, there are relatively few figures or illustrations, and the ones that are presented are fairly basic.

Overall, this text doesn't measure up to the system engineering works offered by Blanchard, or by Eisner's book on Project and Systems Engineering Management. Both Blanchard and Eisner write much more persuasively, and they both fill their works with worthwhile figures that help illustrate system engineering topics. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Useful, but not great
By DDIP
I've been practicing elements of systems engineering for several years and I was seeking a book that would help me pull it all together. This book definitely attempts to do that, but I found it less satisfying than I had hoped. The book does contain a good overview of systems engineering and touches on most if not all the concepts. As another reviewer indicated, the topic coverage is rather inconsistent. Some topics are covered with a great deal of rather wordy text and some, which are of in my view of equal importance, are skimmed over so briefly it feels like the authors felt compelled to mention them but did so in such a superficial way as to not really add much value, e.g. modeling techniques and methods. On the positive side, the explanations of the concept development process phases and principles were some of the best I have encountered. I have referred back to them on several occasions. In addition, the book was also effective in helping me better understand the role of the systems engineer relative to other engineering and project management disciplines. I often wished the book had contained more straightforward diagrams, but that's really a matter of taste. While I do think this is a useful book, I would recommend trying to get it used or from a library before buying new. Overall, I appreciate the authors writing the book, I just wish they had polished it a bit more.

... taking on Systems Engineering so I have read it pretty much cover to cover
By William Schreiber
I am using this for a class I am taking on Systems Engineering so I have read it pretty much cover to cover. Frankly, I have never given such a low score on a book before. It is poorly written, poorly organized, not enough diagrams and not enough examples. I find that there are times I have to read and reread a section to make sure I understand the point of the paragraph.

The book will discuss a topic in several different places so the reader has to bounce around over five different spots to get the total information shared about it. The book discusses many complex and abstract topics and doesn't give a concrete example in many instances.

The information in the book is very good hence 2 stars.
