A horrifying tale that makes complete sense in an upside down world marred by generations of trauma

Part Edgar Allen Poe psychological thriller (horrifying) and part modern day political thriller (educational). This book was hard to put down. Benmalek connects that personal human desire for revenge to a historical pattern of occupation and domination that continues to play itself out on the global stage, to no good result. He illustrates the psychological patterns of domination and control that continue to repeat themselves in the both the internal and outsider politics of the Middle East.

Gripping Good Book!

A gripping story of how far a man will go to save his daughter who is abducted. The story conveys the terror that many Algerians live with on a daily basis, and reveals some of what Algerians experienced during the "troubles" since the 1980's. The book is well written with a strong affect component to it. I felt in my gut the pain and terror the father went through in attempting to rescue his daughter.

Thorough introduction

If you want a basic intro Scrum, a focal point of agile methodology, this offers a great place to start. The author summarizes his hard-won knowledge and years of experience in this brief, readable introduction.

This starts with the basics, including a description of where most project planning starts: in the “waterfall” model. Although it presents non-agile practice in a cursory and simplistic way, the discussion is adequate as a point of contrast to the newer approach. Vii then introduces Scrum basics: the notions of stakeholders, projects and roles within them, project backlogs, and sprints. Later sections flesh out these notions and describe how they all fit together. Along the way, there's plenty of discussion of why each feature matters and what makes it work – ideas the prospective scrum master will need close at hand when trying to convince people to try something different.

Frankly, I'm one who needs convincing. The absolute insistence on following the rules, no matter what, comes across as blind dogmatism. (It also reminds me of a joke about something being like violence – if it doesn't solve your problem, you're not using enough.) The author also mentions the problem of doubters, as authors in the agile world so often do. And, like those other authors, this one seems oblivious to the idea that those doubts might have solid foundation in personal pain and experience. Such dismissiveness does little to win me over. Still, if you want to see what Scrum is about, this looks like a great place to start.

To be honest, I wasn't impressed by the book ...

To be honest, I wasn't impressed by the book. The layout is cheap, lots of lowres pictures that are hard to read.
The Scrum content is OK, but nothing new that can't be found in many other sources. Most arguments in the many "X reasons why" are too simplistic to stand the test in front of skeptical customers.

Hi! Just so you know,�my books and poems are either nice--or naughty.�My nice books are histories of the truly amazing Great Plains, including the Orphan Trains and county seat wars.�Sex rears its head in my naughty works.�Plus I think I should tell you that I'm a personal writer. I don't write much that doesn't have an intimate feeling to it, that isn't centered, in some way, on my history. My life began in Alma, a tiny town in south central Nebraska, where I was born and raised. As I lay in bed, listening to my mother read me to sleep,�I fell in love with words. Mom read oodles of books to me. My favorite was "The Farm Twins" by Lucy Fitch Perkins. When I turned eleven years old, I decided to be a writer.

At twenty-one, I graduated from the�University of Nebraska with a journalism degree.�Then I read Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." Struck with the travel bug, I set out, saw Denver, New Orleans, San Diego, Portland, and New York.�I lived in New York City for thirty years,�where I taught writing at Pratt Institute, and earned a degree in creative writing from Brooklyn College.�

Marcella...Oh, dear Marcella!

Almost from the outset, Marilyn Coffey's MARCELLA put me in mind of Carson McCullers's MEMBER OF THE WEDDING. In that novel, McCullers's principal character, Frankie Addams, is roughly the same age as Marcella and wrestles with many of the same demons. And although both stories are sadly revelatory of the inner contortions a girl must pass through on her way out of childhood and into adolescence, this is where the similarities end.

Coffey's character (the eponymous Marcella) is more explicitly drawn--perhaps indicative of the age in which we live and of what a writer can now permit herself to express in print. I should perhaps mention, however, that what I've just read is the 40th Anniversary Edition. Given that Marcella first appeared in 1973, I'd venture to say that Coffey was way ahead of her time.

The backdrop of Marcella Colby's story--her younger sister, Lucille, her parents, her home life in general--suggests a sterile field in which anguish and obsession would inevitably take root and flourish. While a sympathetic reader might wish for a mother (the father almost doesn't bear mention--and so, Coffey gives him short shrift) whose same gender, at least, would render her a willing partner in Marcella's awkward passage through early adolescence, all we get is a wooden prop, a virtual cipher. Marcella's mother is, in short, deadwood -- and Marcella is consequently set adrift to find her own emotional moorings.

At the prompting of a school acquaintance, Marcella happens to wander into a church. Not just any church, mind you, but an Evangelical church. Her epiphany -- this day and this place in which she is "saved" by a certain Brother Morgan and his retinue -- only serves to contort her mind further and to make her entirely beholden to an all-seeing, all-knowing God. It is, moreover, Marcella's now fervent belief in this omniscient and omnipresent Being that drives her, by degrees, deeper and deeper down into a cauldron of shame for what she feels is a blasphemy of the most heinous and despicable sort: the discovery, through masturbation, that she is a sentient being. Unfortunately, however, and in the absence of someone to tell her differently, she can conceive of her masturbation only as a "filthy, perverted habit" (p. 192).

Enter Brother Morgan (aka "Big Jim") once again--but now as what Marcella perceives to be an almost heaven-sent guide, protector and trustworthy confidant. Their communication opens in letters that Marcella is only too happy to write--frequently, imploringly, keeping almost lockstep pace with her autoerotic sessions--and leads to an invitation to spend a couple of weeks far from home at a camp for young Christians. Brother Morgan indeed delivers. But what he delivers in the form of temporary relief and happiness is something those more world-weary readers among us will likely find suspect from the get-go. I, for one, wasn't in the least surprised when, on the occasion of a one-night sleep-away at the conclusion of Marcella's two-week stay at "Big Jim's" camp in Colorado, the absence of his wife, May, and the absence of a sleeping bag for Marcella quite predictably led to Brother Morgan's laying on of hands (please excuse the obvious double entendre).

Marcella returns home the next day--not precisely deflowered, but spiritually and emotionally debauched.

Is MARCELLA in any sense a didactic story? Is this novel a Bildungsroman of the sort that was once so popular in German literature? Only in the sense that we, as readers, can feel the anguish of Marcella and wish -- as she does at one point late in the story -- that it might somehow be possible to turn the clock backwards. Turn it backwards--or force it to jump ahead to a point where Marcella will no longer be demonized by her own fingers and tormented by the knowledge that she may be less than "a perfect Christian" (p. 191).

I'll now resist the temptation to describe the final chapters of Marilyn Coffey's novel. Better you should read it for yourself to discover Marcella's fate. What I will say by way of conclusion, however, is that the forty years of social progress we've enjoyed since this novel's first appearance made much of it feel almost medieval in its depiction of character and event. Let's hope that by the time the 80th Anniversary Edition appears, some of those same characters and events will feel positively pre-historical.

Spendid Classic

Its good to see the works of Dodge in print again. His six volumes chronicling the history and development of warfare were classics of their kind. Written in the 1880s, these books still have a lot to say about this subject. Granted some of the information on the organiaztion and tactics of ancient armies may be somewhat dated. Also Dodge's somewhat jaundiced view toward Asian non-western armies may seem a bit out of date in these hyper-politically correct times, but his opinions are always insightful and interesting.

What makes this history of Alexander different is the background development of ancient warfare leading up to his time, as well as the purely military analysis. The reader gets a first-rate discussion of military development and innovation before his time which places the Macedonian army and Alexander in greater perspective. You won't find this kind of depth in many other histories on Alexander. Other than JFC Fuller's analysis on Alexander's generalship, there are precious few works that devote much time to this most important aspect of his life. Whatever else Alexander was, and he was, and remains many different things to different people, he was, first and foremost, a great military genius. This is what we should remember him most for. Many more recent works often forget this important aspect, and place too much emphasis on his character. Many biographers try to read too much into his actions, and have their own agendas to pursue in discussing Alexander's actions. This must have been so in Dodges day as well as he often comments on this tendency.

One of the great things about Dodge is his often candid and frank observations. His writing style is also smooth and elegant. Too bad more historians today don't have this style of elegance anymore. Dodge avoids most of the controversial aspects surrounding Alexander's life, although he will often mention them in passing and offer a brief opinion. The reader is constantly reminded that this is a military analysis of the great Macedonian, not a biographical one. While Dodge's view is decidely pro-Alexander, he does acknowledge some of the darker aspects of his character. The reader is left to make his own judgement about these matters. Like Arrian, Dodge tries to stick to the matter at hand, and throughout maintains a solid and consistent narrative. The maps and diagrams provided may seem inadequate by today's standards, but they are numerous and very helpful in trying to understand Alexander's battles and campaigns. More works on Alexander should have maps like this.

Dodge provides a fine military narrative of Alexander. You won't find any mention of the deviant sides of his character, which is so popular today. For those aspects the reader should turn to the fanciful works of Mary Renault who freely discusses such things. Dodge's work is an excellent companion to any modern day biography of Alexander. You won't find any better discussion of the military aspects of his life than in these pages. Highly recommended for all interested in ancient warfare and the development of military conflict in general.

The First of the Great Captains, Unveiled

This book is not a biography -- it is a military history of the art of war during ancient times, with Alexander the Great prominently featured. This volume is the first of five (the next three also published by Da Capo Press) that the author uses to describe and prescribe the art of war. In this inaugural book, Dodge effectively defines his terms, principally the term strategy. This is important because this theme is progressed through the times and actions of Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar, Gustavus Adolphus, and Napoleon.
Dodge's unique contribution to the subject comes from a few persepectives: first, Dodge was a soldier in the Union Army. His books were all published before the turn of the 20th century. He has often physically walked the terrain, studied the topography, and diligently compares the ancient accounts with common sense observation, with some surprising conclusions. Second, Dodge concentrates on what he is qualified to judge, military operations, tactics, leadership, and morale. He is not interesting in court politics, who loved whom, or how much it cost to outfit an elefant for battle. Many times these aspects are presented, but the author makes pains to state his inability to interpret such events. What he does do is to bring to life the man, his armies, battles, and campaigns. Most of all, the reader gets the sense of the Great Captain's position in the military story of man.
There are some weaknesses. There is a sense of "post holing" as Dodge attempts to cover 3000 years of military history and innovation. At times, the military aspects receives more attention than it should, and the books ends rather abruptly instead of leading into the next volume: Hannibal. With these weaknesses in mind the reader will have an enjoyable experience. Dodge's style is crisp, entertaining, humorous at times, and always provocative as he inevitably compares ancient military practices with those that he was familiar with, 19th century America.
The whole series is worth its weight.

A classic which stands up well

In the last few months a film by Oliver Stone has released based on the life of Alexander of Macedon. It is interesting to compare the character portrayed in the film and the character portrayed in Dodges book. In the film the success of Alexander arises because of his charisma his ability to influence his troops. The book tells a different story.

Dodge explains in detail every step of Alexander's campaigns and he tries to explain the logic and reason behind every move. Some have suggested that Alexander's success was the result of his superb and highly trained army. Something bequeathed to him by his father. However others had invaded Persia before without success including the Spartans.

Alexander thought carefully through the problems of conquering such a vast empire as that of Persia. The first part of his campaign was devoted to building a logistical base for the conquest. He thus defeated two Persian armies and then set about the conquest of the Ionian coast, Palestine and Egypt. The reason being to destroy the Persian navy and to ensure that when he moved against the heart of the Persian Empire he would have a steady supply of men food and horses to keep the war going.

The general impression of a military genius is a person who the impulsive movement of troops is able to conquer. Dodges book shows how much Alexander's genius was based on the mastery of detail. At the siege of Tyre he built a land bridge out to the city which was on an island. As the defenders developed means of impeding the work he developed counter measures. As he moved through Asia he ensured the loyalty of the areas he moved through not only by leaving garrisons but building relationships by the giving reductions in tribute by promoting popular rulers and when necessary by shows of brutality and force.

Perhaps the most impressive battle he fought was against the Indian King Porus. His victories against the Persian King Darius had been assisted by that Kings flights from the battle fields. Porus was a lot braver and not only did he have a highly trained army he over 200 war elephants. Alexander to defeat Porus not only had to deal with these issues but he had to cross an enormous river in the face of a well lead and well equipped army. Dodge's account of this battle is probably one of the best in the book. The manourvering and Alexander's skill come out well in Dodge's account.

The negative side of the book is that the social attitudes and world view in the book are those of another age. Dodge was an American veteran of Gettysburg who lost his leg in that battle and in later life made his living as an author. He writes from the perspective that Alexander was not only a military genius but a person who represented the western way of doing things whilst his adversaries represented the Oriental way of doing things. This gloss is a bit unhistorical and occasionally mars the narrative but this is a minor quibble in reading a book which by and large is still readable today and is good. Broadly because of his military experience Dodge is able to understand and to explain the issues of logistics and marching and movement of an army such as Alexanders.

And in comparing the book to the film one can see that the key to Alexander's charisma and place in history is not due to the fact that he was good looking or that he carried himself in a certain way. Rather the charisma is something which grew from his mastery of detail and his ability to be a successful commander.

Excellent Product

I don't know if this book will result in better test scores. What I do know is that analogies are always on tests that you see in public schools (standardized tests). I also know that thinking in analogies, using analogies while you explain something is a good skill to have in your life.

This book begins with a quick review of level a and then moves on to harder and harder analogies.

My 9 year old enjoyed this book for homeschooling. He would like to see more books like this.

Very useful as test prep

This book continues where the prior level leaves off. I'm sure you can start these at a lower level than is advertised, to encourage vocabulary acquisition. I didn't use it heavily with my oldest, but I will use it heavier and earlier with my younger two. These types of analogies will definitely show up again in your children's future testing endeavors.

Great book for supplementing school work

I bought this for both my second and fourth graders to help prep them for gifted testing at their school. My goal wasn't really to help them improve in their analytical thinking, but just to get them more practice in these types of questions for their tests.

They both found the book to be fairly easy (although the younger one has a more limited vocabulary, so that was a challenge at times), and the three of us enjoyed discussing their answers and talking through the thinking behind those answers. I would easily recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting, outside of the classroom workbook.
