Excellent handbook

Since "The Canterbury Tales" can be rather daunting for the student, I think this is an exceptional way to garner more of the needed information. The definitions are to the point, and the summaries aren't lengthy and over-bearing. If this is something to be read in the classroom, I see no reason why this shouldn't accompany the text.

The CliffsNotes booklet on THE CANTERBURY TALES is a helpful supplement which will lead the user to a deeper understanding of a fairly difficult subject. It contains information about Geoffrey Chaucer and his work in addition to an introduction, brief synopsis and character map. Critical commentaries on The Prologue, individual tales and Chaucer's Retraction are included as well as character analyses of Harry Bailey, the Host, the Knight, the Miller, the Wife of Bath and the Pardoner. Three critical essays are added plus an index. Properly used this guide will make the learning experience more meaningful as long as the student reads the entire literary work and completes all classroom assignments.

When Middle English Gets Too Difficult . . .

I'm one of those rare people who have actually read all of THE CANTERBURY TALES in the original Middle English. However, when teaching the tales for the first time to my senior high school students, I realized there was a lot I had forgotten. The first place I went for assistance was CLIFFSNOTES: THE CANTERURY TALES by Dr. James L. Roberts. The book includes a brief biography about Chaucer's life, an introduction to the work, a list of characters, a summary and commentary about each one of the tales, character analysis of selected characters (Harry Bailey, the Knight, the Miller, the Wife of Bath, the Pardoner), a few selected essays, a review, and a list of further resources. I found Cliffsnotes extremely helpful in preparing to teach THE CANTERBURY TALES for the first time and I know that some of my students found it just as useful as well (Middle English and high school students don't mix very well together). A great tool to supplement one's reading, studying, and teaching of Chaucer's THE CANTERBURY TALES.

excellent advice

The book was a joy to read

His key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty manner

For example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

Consumed My Whole Day - Very Enjoyable Read & Interesting

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.

I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).

I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.

I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.

Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"

I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.

Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. Lifts Your Spirits with Accurate and Positive Perceptions

This book is absolutely great. But, you might think, yeah, I'm probably just another Dilbert nut so I'm clearly biased. And, you'd be wrong. I like Dilbert but I'm not a rabid Dilbert fan. I admit I read Scott's blog and sometimes write comments on it. Aha! Now you're saying, he's a Scott Adam's fan and therefore must be biased. Wrong again Kemosabe. Many times I disagree with Scott. However, when I do agree with him it's almost like we're the same person, or he has my house bugged and follows me around ala the Truman Show. I'm not sure. But one thing's for sure, reading this book expanded my own insights and put me in a very positive frame of mind. Thank you for that, Scott. I think any intelligent person possessing a healthy curiosity about the nature of success and its many iterations will thoroughly enjoy this book. After reading it you may not get rich but you should get enriched perhaps in ways you didn't see coming. To my mind that's worth the few bucks I dropped on it and worth recommending to my friends and even strangers like you. I don't typically re-read too many books, but I'm going to do just that right now, see if I missed anything. So, buy the book and it just might make you a happier, more enlightened person. Or it might reinforce what you already knew but never addressed in detail. Either way, thanks Scott, it's all good.

From her conservative British background, Alice A. Bailey (1880-1949) led a life that took her in many directions. However, her life always led towards the time when through drastic personal experience of many kinds, she acquired a synthesis of outlook and understanding as well as an absolute conviction that one divine life pervades and animates the one humanity; that the Plan for humanity requires the cooperation and service of trained and dedicated human beings intelligently informed about world affairs, in collaboration with those who form the spiritual Hierarchy, the inner government of the planet. A total of twenty-four books were written by Alice Bailey. These books constitute a continuation of the Ageless Wisdom, a body of esoteric teaching handed down from ancient times in a form which is always suitable to each period. The Labours of Hercules

One of the easier to read of Bailey's very heady works, but non the less, contains a vast amount of wisdom and wonderful keys to self unfoldment. Each sign of the Zodiac is explained and its true purpose in this lifetime revealed. A great inspirational book to carry in the briefcase or suitcase, to read before a walk on the beach or in the woods.

a myth for each month

This book provides a mythical story about each of the 12 Labors of Hercules. Each labor corresponds to one of the astrological signs. There is a discussion about the symbolism of the myth after each one. Hercules represents each of us - a soul incarnate in matter, and the labors represent the difficulties and tests we encounter in the material world. It's fascinating to read the labor for the current month each month as we go through the astrological year.
Alice Bailey's books are somewhat difficult to read, but well worth it for the spiritual seeker. Her work has resonated with me as truth more deeply than anything I've ever read. It is highly mental material, and I can only read a few pages at a time. Any more than that gives me a headache.

I grew up knowing there was more to mythology then just stories and the Zodiac too for that matter. But never was hip with most peoples interpretations. This Bailey book goes beyond all others on symbology. All mythology and Zodiac signs have deep spiritual roots and this easy read has the answers to many questions I have had for years. Example. Where does 666 originate and its real meaning? This book gives all kinds of Bible symbolism even for Revelations. These preachers need to read this book and get their stories right. The main theme is the trials the soul goes through to reach perfection. Thats why so much bible symbolism is revealed cause Jesus went through the same trials. Myths and the Zodiac were created eons ago to teach spiritual truths before written language. If your looking to expand your mind on bible and spiritual symbolism and astrology this book is for you. They say there is no such thing as coincidence but at five years old I watched Hercules and Popeye cartoons made by Who? The publishers of the Bailey books. LUCIS Remember the flying pens?

I have studied about the importance of midnight prayer and have actually prayed at midnight with absolute results to answered prayers. I did do away with it when I ended up working late. I have struggled in getting back into this routine. It has never left my mind and spirit to pray at midnight. I know greater impacts happen when I pray at midnight. God answers prayers all day long, however, there is something special about praying at midnight. Agbo did not mention this in his book, but praying at midnight is usually quiet. The streets are slow, children sleeping, etc., and I, personally can hear from God and He ministers to me more during the hours of 11:45 to 5a. It is awesome and truly rewarding.

The Power of Midnight Prayer by Pastor Gabriel Agbo has not only provided the purpose of midnight prayer, but has enhanced the reasons and we should pray at midnight. This nation as well as the rest of the world has and is in turmoil today. We are truly in the last days and it time for the Body of Christ to go into battle like never before.

This author has really emphasized this and more in the book. There are many many scriptures about things that has transpired due to midnight prayer. I do not want to give the book completely away. All I can say is WOW, WOW and more WOW! This is TRULY A MUST READ!!!!!!!! Also along with this book read The Complete Armor by McVey. I recommend reading the Armor first and then this book. I read both books back and forth until I got to chapter of the Armor and had to finish it first. Both books are truly worth the money. I plan on getting the hard copy for my library. These books along with the Word of the Living God has changed my life for the better.

I've really enjoyed this book as it lays out biblically the reasons to pray in the midnight hour. Rev Agbo takes the time to outline the relationship of persistent midnight prayer and spiritual warfare very simply and yet powerfully.

A great book with some clear humor in it to bring a few chuckles. The philosophy is ancient, but the teaching for modern day people is where it's at. So many people fall into a mentality of just taking things as is, rather than believing they can change things around. It is definitely out of the box thinking, so if you're not prepared for it, you'll eschew it, but if you are seeking other means of facing life... means that prove you have choices... this book is a great beginning in Access Consciousness thinking. Be prepared, though, it's very, very DIFFERENT than other teachings out there. You will definitely arch a few eyebrows and go, "Huh! Never saw it like that." You may not agree with everything they teach, I have a hard time myself, but if anything it will get you switching gears and not being afraid to QUESTION! :) That's what I like about any spiritual teaching that gets you to consider other paths and become curious. Don't be afraid, it's not meant to hurt you, it's meant to free you. That's what I took away from this. :)

A Wonderful Book

This is a wonderful book on many levels, among them the personal relationships, an abiding love of music and, of course, the mechanics of the wonderful instrument called simply "the piano," as well as buying tips. I've read it twice now and found new revelations that escaped me the first time. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

About the Author

Frederick G. Crane is an executive professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the College of Business at Northeastern University, Editor of the Journal of the Academy of Business Education, and co-founder of Ceilidh Insights LLC, an innovation management training, intellectual property consulting, and consumer insight company. He was formerly a professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at the University of New Hampshire and a chair and full professor at Dalhousie University. He currently teaches courses in entrepreneurship, innovation, and entrepreneurial marketing.

His academic research activities have resulted in more than 100 publications, including fifteen books. Additionally, he currently serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals. His current research stream intersects the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship, corporate venturing, and innovation, and he is conducting ongoing research on the psychology of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial branding, and innovation readiness. Dr. Crane is also an award-winning educator who has received numerous honors for teaching excellence over the past twenty years.
