I just wanted to post that I bought this book many years ago when it first was published, and I have totally fell in love that book. The heroin and the hero are fun and likeable. The heroin is a little bit of a shrew but in a good way. The hero is courageous maybe bordeline cold but shows his vulnerability at some point in the book.

About the Author
Malcolm Bradbury is a novelist, critic, television dramatist and Emeritus Professor of American Studies at the University of East Anglia. He is author of the novels Eating People is Wrong (1959); Stepping Westward (1965); The History Man (1975); which won the Royal Society of Literature Heinemann Prize and was adapted as a famous television series; Rates of Exchange (1983) which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize; Cuts: A Very Short Novel (1987), also televised; and Doctor Criminale (1992). His critical works include The Modern American Novel (1984; revised edition, 1992); No, Not Bloomsbury (essays, 1987); The Modern world: Ten Great Writers (1988); From Puritanism to Post-modernism: A History of American Literature (with Richard Ruland, 1991) He is the author of a collection of seven stories and nine parodies, entitled Who Do You Think You Are? (1976), and of several works of humour and satire, including Why Come to Slaka? (1986), Unsent Letters (1988; revised edition, 1995) and Mensonge (1987). Many of his books are published by Penguin. In addition, he has written many television plays and the television 'novel' The Gravy Train and The Gravy Train Goes East. He has adapted several television series, including Tom Sharpe's Porterhouse Blue, Kinglsey Amis's The Green Man and Stella Gibbon's' Cold Comfort Farm, now a feature film.

A concise and enriching look at the history of American Literature

An exceptional book for a concise, in a nutshell history of American Literature. I was assigned this book for a graduate class, which was surprising considering that it inexpensive. It's a book I've returned to and plan on returning to in the future.

Literature History in a fun and readable medium

I was so tired of boring text-book style reads in which I was being lectured from the pages and lacked any kind of involvement or attachment to the sibject matter. I expected the same from this book and was dreading reading it when it was assigned for an American Literature class. I was sorely disapointed but in a good way! The authors have found a way to balance information with approachableness and for once I didn't feel lectured, but rather engaged in the subject matter. It was so good I read beyond what was required for the class and finished it. If you are taking an American Lit class, I recommend it even if your professor doesn't and if you are interested in writing I would recommend it also as it is enlightening and a good read!

If I taught American History in college I would require this book! I have been teaching American Lit for high school students for the past 7 years and I believe that this is a fantastic addition to my library. It adds a fullness and historical insight into the events of the periods, and best of all, it has suggested works that I am now using in my class.

Good advice here

Having survived the birth of my quadruplet grandchildren eleven years ago, I had to wonder what this book could tell me that I hadn't already been through. However, as I read, I noted a number of points that would have helped my son and his wife through some really rough times. Especially the part about accepting help.

I think far too many new parents of multiples probably think that, just because they have older children, they know what to do and can handle it themselves. Not so. The authors made some very valid points on this subject.

The synchronization of schedules is important, too.

This book was definitely the result of experience and not just something someone "thought up" and then wrote about. It satisfies a need for information, especially for those expecting twins as their first.

I have recommended this book to a friend of mine whose son is nervously awaiting the birth of his firstborn, a set of twins, a boy and a girl. May he read it and learn something!

As a fellow parent of multiples who lived to tell about it (my girls are now 28), I wish I'd had something like this a long time ago.
