Great book - No test sheet

This is the book you need for the Food & Beverage Operations course. 5th Edition has all of the updated information and it matches the new exam test for your certificate. I highly recommend the book, however it does NOT contain the scan tron sheet that's needed for the exam. I've gone through 2 books on Amazon and they were both neatly packaged and shipped within 2 days of each book, but neither contained the scan tron sheet. That's the only reason why this book gets 4 stars, it would get 5 if the sheet was in it like the previous editions.

Disappointed

The book itself is what I was looking for. Although I received my book in excellent condition & promptly, a scan tron was NOT included nor was this info included in the description. Now I have to spend even more money to obtain a scan tron separately than I would of if I had purchased them together & all the ... I have to go thru to find one and then order. Disappointed & won't order thru this person again! Thanks DKnight..I appreciate your apology but your decision not to include "no scan tron included" cost me and thanks for the lesson. Not sure if you sell books regularly or not but if you do, please get better at doing your homework. Disappointed

When you only read a book, your knowledge is based on imaginary conceptions. When you practice, either virtually with a software or even better ,physically with a real PLC or a PLC trainer, you get much better understanding and learning results to face industrial automation problems.
This book is giving you the chance to read the theory and understand the basic concepts, practice with a software simulator tool� (for downloading) and reinforce your learning process. Later, if you want to make real connections of devices to PLCs, we have designed several PLC trainers (not included), which work with the book�s software.

About the Author
Mr Charria holds an Electronics Engineering degree. He also has some post-graduate studies in the field of Machine Vision in Holland and also in the field of Environmental Sciences. He has more than twenty five years working with all type of industrial automation products and processes and serving as lecturer and professor in many educational institutions. He has participated as an engineer and consultant in automation projects in several countries and helped several OEMs to define the automation strategy for their machinery. His experience as engineer relates to very important companies like the Dutch company Philips , the German company VARTA and more recently the American company Latin-Tech .
Orlando Charria is a dreamer, writer, scientist, ecologist and enthusiast of innovation . He grew up simply in the rural lands. In the last years, based on his interdisciplinary background, he has developed several applications and inventions to solve big environmental problems: He is making the design of the First Electrovalve for climate change to harvest waste and rain water, he also designs Vertical Agriculture Growth Units (VAGUs) to produce food under harsh environmental conditions and restricted resources of land and water. Another very important design is a Human Powered Generator for people to produce electrical energy while working out.
He believes that children are the future so, he started a collection of books for them which help them to understand science and develop creativity.

Save your money

This book is not very helpful. After reading the book,what knowledge it increased for me I could have learned in 15-25 minutes. If you expect this book to teach you the do's and dont's or give you as the title suggests a good foundation in fundamentals. it wont!. Its more geared toward making you buy the simulator that the author is hawking.

The books starts out well with fundamentals but about halfway through the book switches to teaching you how to use a software for lab lessons and include a link where you can buy it. From that point to the index its all about teaching you that software and labs that accompany. If you don't buy the software then the second half of the book is meaningless to the reader.

Even if you already have simulators you can not benefit from this book's lab. If fact it would be more honest if the author forewarned that to get the most out of this book you will have to also purchase the simulator, better yet, the book should come with the simulator. Not only do they want to sell you a simulator program, they have a whole slue of devices that you have to buy to connect to the software.

So if you have AB 500, Micrologix, logic pro or any of the other simulators they don't sync with this book. This is not about you learning and growing. This is about being manipulated for more money.

Its really misleading and a waste to sell the book without including the simulator. The extra necessary equipment is burdensome.

Just think if you are just trying to learn programming this isn't the book but if you are looking for a money trap then by all means empty your wallet here.

I'm going to avoid this author moving forward. This was a waste of time and money.

Not well edited. Poorly written and definitely misleading

This is the first item that reviews on amazon have let me down. This book is poorly written and bothers me trying to read. There are examples referred to that don't exist. The author is talking on one subject on one page and you think it will be continued on the next.....nope! You can find better information online than what's in this book. And the software that they mention....not a cd, but a website download. Kicker is, when you request the location to download...they never reply back....so no software! DO NOT BUY!!! If you do, you only have yourself to blame.

Excellent learning tool

Book is very well written, clear and precise explanations of the theory and principles of PLCs and logic, good use of examples,simulator is a very good tool to provide hands on interaction to allow those to learn at their own pace. I have been in this industry for 22 yrs and would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn industrial automation, would also made a good training tool or reference manual

Maria Alonso Alonso holds a BA in English Philology and another BA in Hispanic Philology, both earned at the Universidade de Vigo. She is currently working towards her PhD, after having completed an MA in English Studies and an MA in Applied Linguistics. Jeannette Bello Mota is a PhD candidate at the Universidade de Vigo, Spain where she works as a researcher and teaching staff in the department of English, French and German Philology. She is currently researching towards her PhD thesis Ethnicity and Gender in Hip Hop Culture within the United States. Alba de Bejar Muinos is a predoctoral researcher at the Universidade de Vigo, where she has also worked as an adjunct teacher. Member of the research unit Feminario de Investigacion Feminismos e Resistencias, her research centers on the fields of Diaspora, Globalization, Citizenship, Gender and Transnational Studies as they pertain to the literary. After completing her MA in Advanced English Studies at the Universidade de Vigo, Laura Torrado Marinas is currently working as a researcher while she finishes her doctoral thesis on the Old English elegies. About the Author

Thomas G. Weiss is Presidential Professor of Political Science at The CUNY Graduate Center and Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, where he is co-director of the United Nations Intellectual History Project. He is the chair of the Academic Council on the UN System and the former editor of its journal, Global Governance. He has written or edited some 35 books and numerous articles about multilateral approaches to international peace and security, humanitarian action, and sustainable development.

Sam Daws is Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the UK. He has served as a senior policy advisor on UN issues for 17 years, including three years as First Officer in the Executive Office of Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He previously directed a Geneva-based international consultancy. He undertook doctoral studies on UN reform at New College, Oxford, and has been a visiting fellow at Cambridge and Yale Universities. He has co-authored or edited six books.

A must read for any serious policy analyst

I noticed that Dr. Stone's latest work was what can be called a "best seller" in the Policy arena on Amazon, since its debut December 2011 (roughly number 1 for nearly a month, then at least the top 20 thereafter). I was surprised that as of July 3, 2012 not even one person reviewed the book. Perhaps everyone is speechless. But, it really is a good book. Simply put, this third edition of Policy Paradox is an excellent work for anyone seriously wanting to change the world for the better by understanding the political arguments that undergird social policies, which often, and erroneously appear rationally constructed. By understanding how policy can be a struggle for ideas and the control of ambiguity in communities, which she refers to as the "polis," the policy analyst/advocate will be better prepared to jump into the debates by posing alternative viewpoints that ought to more closely adhere to fundamental humanistic principles of social justice and human rights. Having used the previous editions of her book for roughly fifteen years in my policy classes, I must say, that this book with its updated examples and now a new addition of "welfare" ( in addition to liberty, security, equity, and efficiency) as worthwhile goals for policy, which she says unite us as they divide us, is a must read for those from a variety of disciplines, who wish to engage in policy analysis and implementation. It is also extremely well written as the previous editions, with boxes that adequately summarize major points. Interspersed also with amusing anecdotes and even cartoons, I am sure that the reader will not be disappointed with her lively, yet serious style, for as she reminds us, when it comes to policy, the stakes are high.

This book is a classic for good reason. It lays out concepts clearly

This book is a classic for good reason. It lays out concepts clearly, intelligently, and convincingly, all while sounding conversational and not overly technical, as is a pitfall of many academic publications. Stone's frameworks are just that--frameworks--and are useful for structuring one's analysis of policy, while also recognizing that no real world situation fits the frameworks perfectly.

My one large critique of Stone is her extremely apparent liberal bias. While the ideas she presents are not inherently liberal or conservative (though one could certainly make the argument that the 'market model' she argues against is a conservative one and the 'polis model' she champions is a liberal one), the examples she draws to illustrate them are biased towards a liberal perspective. Whenever she presents something 'bad' done in a policy situation, it is almost always a Republican or conservative doing it, while liberal ideas and actions are almost always presented as the 'right thing' to do or a compassionate application of policy. Even as a liberal myself, it got a bit grating towards the end of the book. At times in certain chapters it seemed like Stone was soapboxing about an issue, even if that issue was only tangentially relevant to the topic at hand.

If you can get past the bias, and perhaps only skim the examples she uses, there is still a lot to get out of this book.

Economics and rationality against the community and politics

This is a fascinating and thought provoking book on political decision making. I have used it as a text in my doctoral course on policy analysis for nearly two decades.

She juxtaposes two models in this book. (1) The rationality project. This is where we use rational approaches to policy making, including economic analysis. The idea is to use neutral and objective data to make the best policy decision possible.The model for society and its functioning is the market, with its emphasis on self-interest and rational calculation. (2) On the other hand, she points out that this does not describe the political world. Here (see the chart on page 35), we see that community is important (not just self-interest), altruism has a role to play, cooperation and competition coexist, and so on. Politics is an arena where there is contestation over facts, values, even numbers. There is no objective, neutral evaluation of facts. The very nature of the economic, rational approach is contested.

The volume explores the debates between the political and rational models in such arenas as the goals for society, the nature of deciding on which problems should be addressed, and how solutions are addressed.

This is a thought-provoking work that will leave readers thinking about the nature of policy making and what is at stake.

About the Author
Glenn Lowry is a professor of management information systems at the College of Business and Economics, United Arab Emirates University, where he was the Foundation Executive Director of the MBA program. He holds a PhD from Rutgers University. A charter member of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), Dr. Lowry has held a number of senior academic posts in Australia and the U.S. His research and teaching interests include software engineering, systems development, organizational technology uptake and change management, diffusion of innovation, and research methods. An editor of the Journal of Information Technology Education and member of the editorial board of the Journal for Information Technology Theory and Application, Dr. Lowry has authored or edited six books and more than 80 refereed papers in the discipline. Rodney Turner is a lecturer in information systems at Victoria University (Melbourne). He has a masters degree in education from Monash University and information systems from RMIT. Apart from Victoria University, he has held teaching positions at RMIT and at Swinburne University. He has also worked on Australian aid projects in the Philippines and in China involving information technology. His research interests are in information systems education and technology acceptance in developing nations. He has authored more than 20 papers.
