Awesome Play

The script writing is brilliant. It delves into the mind of a man who is confused about himself and what his abilities are as an actor. It has, humor, drama, and excellent pacing. I actually cared about the characters and each action that a character committed led to more story.

Read the play. You wont be disappointed.

Another win for Wicklund

This is the third installment of Wicklund's In the Garden series, and I loved every minute of it. This story lacks the intensity of the first book, as this is a well-executed story of redemption instead.

Lady Jillian is engaged, but she can't deny her best friend who wants to watch a duel incognito. She goes along but somehow finds herself in the get-away carriage of Adrian St. John, Earl of Wickham, (or "Lord Wicked," as he's known to the ton) who flees the scene when he accidentally kills his opponent. Jillian is finally returned home two days later after Adrian escapes to France, but though nothing happened, the damage to her reputation has been done. Jilted by her fiance, she retires to the country to live out her days as a fallen woman.

Eight years later, Adrian returns to England to find Jillian's brother demanding that he marry her to restore her reputatation. He's willing, but Jillian is of another mind altogether. And so an enthralling story commences.

This was a wonderful book! Wicklund is an amazing author, and I wish she had more available. Again she offers an interesting & entertaining story with characters one can't help but love.

I adore Jillian & loved reading about all of her quirks & effective bird-flipping at society's expectations. She figures her reputation was ruined when she didn't do anything wrong, so now she does exactly what she wants, when she wants.

Adrian is an exciting hero, and one can't help but root for him to win Jillian's hand. The passion between the two characters is intense, & it's amusing to see Adrian meet his match in a woman who's willing to buck convention even more than he is.

Add Jillian's aging Aunt Prudence into the mix, along with Jillian's older brother, Simon Fitzgerald, Marquess of Sutherfield (read his story in book 2 of the series, In the Garden of Seduction (The Garden Series)), their cousin Philip, Jillian's ex-fiance, & Jillian's "best friend," and the supporting cast is fleshed out nicely while helping move the story along at an appropriate pace.

I'm preparing to re-read this book as I type (I bought & read it 2 mos ago), and I find myself excited over the prospect. This is a great read & certainly price-worthy. Read it! I think you'll agree.

Great start, but that's it

I had high hopes from the blurb - a unique and intriguing premise - and the story started out great. Unfortunately, the initial drama was over much too soon, and suddenly we're thrown forward eight years and the characters have changed completely.

If I'm reading a "reformed rake" story, I want to SEE "Lord Wicked" change over time and EARN his redemption. Telling the reader "it's eight years later and he's really really sorry" just doesn't cut it. We miss out completely on the restless, conflicted wickedness and get him tirelessly patient, self-sacrificial and boring.

Likewise, I would have been much more likely to have compassion and respect for the heroine if I could have SEEN the consequences of the initial drama. Instead, we leave Jillian as a 17-year-old caught up in the aftermath of a scandalous duel and never really understand what turned her into a rude, self-centered bitch. She refuses to acknowledge her own behavior in the fiasco and blames everyone else around her.

I know the author was trying for an "independent and feisty" heroine, but Jillian veered off that narrow path straight into "obnoxious and unlikeable."

A reformed rake needs someone worth reforming for, and Jillian - at least in the first part of the book - definitely isn't it. And Lord Wicked was already reformed by the time he got to her, so what's the point?

Love the series so far!

I normally don't write reviews, however, I think this series (especially considering the price) is wonderful. If your are a fan of historical romance- I suggest you download the series to your kindle (I believe the first book in the series is free).

Great Topic, Good Execution

This book is a welcome addition to a genre with far too few titles available. The serious critical analysis of "other" cinema is almost entirely unavailable in book form. That said the main shortcomings of this book are the first two essays. The otherwise excellent essay on Tod Browning's "Freaks" is over long and a bit repetitive. And the essay on Castle's "The Tingler" over reaches on a few scatological connections/conclusions. These are minor problems with an otherwise informative and scholarly text on a subject most would not consider worthy of such attention. As a fan of non-mainstream cinema, I wish there were more books like this and I hope the author continues delving deeply into similar subject matter.

An interesting subject chocked full of erroneous information

The topic of taboo and "offensive films" is truly a fascinating subject. It help even more if you're a die hard fan of these films. Naturally, if one likes viewing these films, reading research on the films should be fun and interesting as you explore further and further into the dark realms of the bizarre and obscurity. This read, however, is nothing but frustrating for any person with exploitation background, as it's convoluted with incorrect information and bad research.

As I mentioned, the biggest problem with this book is just wrong information across the board. Not only does Miss Brottman get film dates wrong, she gets chronological order wrong, character names wrong, actors' roles wrong, hell, she even mixes up films (for instance, Deep River Savages by Umberto Lenzi was NOT released in 1981; it was released in 1972. IT started the "cannibal genre", NOT Deodato's Last Cannibal World, which was released in 1977, NOT 1975).

Another short coming that I was frustrated with is the miniscule depth Brottman takes on the subject of Mondo films. She briefly (and when I say briefly, I mean BRIEFLY) touches on the works of Jacopetti, Prosperi, Climati, Morra, and the Castiglionis, the true godfathers of the genre, and then spends the rest of the chapter focusing on direct-to-video compilation death films, such as Faces of Death, Traces of Death, and Death Scenes. These films are a disgrace to the Mondo name and is lame exploitation that makes fun of victims and are meant for sickos' to get their rocks off on. Nothing on the Mondo Cane series, the Savage Trilogy, or the Africa series by the Castiglionis is discussed in ANY detail. More, she mentions the names as part of the genre's history and dives face first into bad topics (also chocked full of erroneous information).

The topics on the more mainstream films (such as Freaks and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) are more correct and professional (though years are often incorrect), but information on these films is much more readily accessible, which would probably be why their sections are more accurate. Also, books dedicated entirely to that one film are available, with more substance, history, and information all together. Those looking for good research on obscure films then should beware.

Overall, it's a mess. A simple check into all of these films' backgrounds will be able to point to the errors of Miss Brottman's information. Plus, most of the information really is nothing new. I was disappointed in the fact that I ordered this book for research, but was unable to cite anything that I didn't already know (or, again, covered by different books in much more depth). An interesting read for Miss Brottman's opinions, but a very unwise choice for good, solid factual information.

No jargon, smooth read.

This book was helpful to me in a grad course I took on horror films. Although its an academic book, its not too hard to read, not too much theory or jargon, like similar books. Also the author treats these movies tongue-in-cheek. He's not claiming they're great films, just that they effect you in a certain way. Better than most academic books about horror films. Could use more pictures.

Did satire die with communism?

Do you find most sit-coms imbecilic and Monty Python's Flying Circus, well, adolescent? Then what you are looking for is satire. As Ambrose Bierce, the great American satirist of the late 19th and early 20th century put it in his Devil's Dictionary, satire is "an obsolete kind of literary composition in which the vices and follies of the author's enemies were expounded with imperfect tenderness. In this country satire never had more than a sickly and uncertain existence, for the soul of it is wit, wherein we are dolefully deficient, the humor that we mistake for it, like all humor, being tolerant and sympathetic. Moreover, although Americans are `endowed by their Creator' with abundant vice and folly, it is not generally known that these are reprehensible qualities, wherefore the satirist is popularly regarded as a soul-spirited knave, and his ever victim's outcry for codefendants evokes a national assent."
One thing is true. For reasons unknown to me, when you are trying to think of a 20th century satirist, he is likely to be Russian, Polish or Czech. And none of them published anything during the last ten years. Satire seems to be especially flourishing in a repressive environment, be it Austrian-Hungarian empire, tzarist Russia, or communism.
Stanislaw Jerzy Lec (1909-1966), a Polish aphorist, was one of the last grand masters of the art of satire. His brilliant bitter-sweet collection of aphorisms, "Mysli nieuczesane", was first published as a serial in 1957, and English translation by Jacek Galazka followed in 1962. "More Unkempt Thoughts" is a follow-up, published posthumously in 1968. If you can find this gem, give it a chance.

A Wonderful Story

My mother gave me her copies of "Amberwell" and "Summerhills", its sequel, and I enjoyed them emensely. While this book was labled on the cover "A Romance", it is a more a family story (and a dysfunctional family at that). Stevenson looks for the positve in everything and inspires the reader to do the same. The children in the Ayrton family are survivors. They are able to rise above it all despite what WW II does to the family and the family home of Amberwell which they all come to love and cherish.
While the books center around the Ayrton family of Lowland Scotland, it is actually more about all the people who live on the Amberwell estate ( and the surrounding district), servant as well as master. The war breaks down the class barrier and brings everyone together as a unit to preserve the home that they all love and to help build the school that they would eventually call Summerhills. It is a joy to read. I would also recommend "Celia's House" and "Listening Valley".

Another lovely Scottish novel by D. E. Stevenson released for Kindle by Endeavour Press! Amberwell, on the protected south west coast area of Scotland is a delightful property, home of the Ayrton family. We watch the 5 children born between WWI and WWII grow up and enter the world, with special focus on the happenings during WWII. The three sisters and two brothers also have to learn to deal with their difficult parents. The atmosphere and background of Scotland is almost another character. By the end of the book, the reader will be ready for more about the Ayrtons and if Endeavour releases Summerhills soon, the reader can continue the history of this family. An enjoyable read.

Wonderfully written!

I love the way this book is written--so simple and sweet with vivid, but not flowery or wordy, pictures and descriptions. It gives the reader a look into life on a Scottish estate, not focusing too much on any one character, but letting us have a close glimpse of each of the five children as they grow up. It is a "real" story--life happens naturally, not with too much melodrama. I recommend it for any audience.
